AUTHOR INTERVIEW

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I was a little girl, which means I have been writing for a very long time. As a child, I wrote short stories, poems and even plays for my home church – Antioch Baptist Church in Bossier City.

What is your educational background? I earned my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Texas College in Tyler, Texas and I earned my master’s degree in Political Science from The University of Oklahoma.

What prompted you to write this book?

The Lord planted the idea for this book. It was planted in my heart when I was a little girl. Although, Book 1- More Than Sisters is a work of fiction, it is based on true life events. It is a way to honor my sister, who is and continues to be more than a sister to me.

Who do you see as the audience for your book?

The audience for my books are adult and young adult Christians.

What could readers hope to gain by reading your book? My life is a living testimony. My stories are based on events in my life. I want readers to know that our Heavenly Father is a loving father and He cares about us and everything that happens to us. He loves us so much that He gave His only begotten son for us. I want readers to understand that whatever temptation they are faced with, it is not a new temptation and that God has already provided a way out.

What are the biggest challenges you face as a writer?

I struggle with making sure my work is as close to perfection as possible. It’s normal. It is part of why I am a writer. I don’t want to release anything unless it is my best, and sometimes, this can be my undoing. The solution is to realize that my work is perfect as it is. The key isn’t to perfect something before it is released. I have a team of editors and proofreaders and we work toward perfection. Yes, mistakes are made. But improvements are made based on the feedback.

What motivates you to write?

I am motivated by the ministry of reconciliation. We are called into His service: “[God] reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us.” (2 Corinthians 5:18, 20). God has commissioned each of us to share with others His message of love and peace. I want to move people toward a reconciled relationship with God.

What is your average workday like as a writer?

I don’t have an average work day. My goal is to write, research and/or promote everyday. Some days, I accomplish a little bit of everything and some days, I accomplish one or two of them.

Do you have a family? Does being a writer interfere with that?

Yes, I have been married for 32 years and I have two grown children. We are empty nesters now and have more time to do the things we love.

Do you travel a lot?

I do travel but not as much as I would like to. I enjoy getting out, meeting readers and connecting with other writers.

What kind of books do you like to read?

I enjoy reading Christian fiction and biographies. I also read non-fiction, leadership and writing guides.

Do you belong to any writing groups or associations?

I am a member of two local writing associations – Tallahassee Writers Association (TWA) and the Christian subgroup of Tallahassee Authors Network (TAN).

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?

I would tell them to read as much as possible, write everyday and to connect with someone who has done or is doing what he/she wants to do.

Are you working on another writing project?

I am working on the fourth installment in the Ferguson Family series. It is in the early stages but should be released next year.

How do you spend your time when you're not writing?

When I am not writing, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, solving crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

"No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord." Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)

How long did it take after you finished writing the book until it was actually published?

Approximately two weeks.

Do you prefer to do your research at the library or online?

I prefer to research online in the privacy of my own home.

Do you attend writers' conferences?

Yes, I attend writers' conferences. My relationships are among the most important factors in my growth and success as a writer. For this reason alone, it’s imperative that I attend conferences.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author, W. Mason Dunn, born in Bossier City, Louisiana, received her undergraduate degree from Texas College in Business Administration and earned a graduate degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. She is an established professional with over 22 years as a higher education experience for the military while traveling with her husband before he retired from the Marine Corps after 20 years of service. The breadth of her personal and professional experiences have contributed enormously to her fascinatingly inspirational writings.

Waletta has been married for 32 years to retired Marine, Donald Michael Dunn. She is the proud mother of two young, adult children, Michael Stewart Dunn and daughter, Ashley Elaine Dunn.

Mrs. Dunn participated in many writing and speech competitions in her younger years. She traveled her home state of Louisiana participating in numerous contests, winning many of them. One of her most memorable competitions was the "Voice of Democracy Contest". Mrs. Dunn was originally interested in journalism until she took her first accounting class in college, which catapulted her career in a different direction. However, inspired by her award-winning sister, screen and play write, Judi Ann Mason ("Sister Act II; Back In The Habit", "A Different World", "I'll Fly Away"), Mrs. Dunn never lost her love and passion of writing.
