FROM STORY TO REFLECTION: Pieces of Us and Its Companion Journal

A character’s struggle may remind us of a season we have lived through. That understanding helped shape not only Pieces of Us, the first book in The Story of Us anthology series, but also its guided companion journal. Together, the anthology and journal invite readers to experience the stories and then make room for reflection, prayer, and thoughtful next steps.
RELATIONSHIPS THAT SHAPE US
Pieces of Us brings together 11 original Christian fiction stories written by 11 authors, each offering a distinct perspective on love and relationships.

Throughout the collection, characters encounter circumstances that challenge their expectations, expose vulnerabilities, test relationships, and require difficult choices. Their stories explore marriage, connection, disappointment, forgiveness, faith, healing, restoration, second chances, and hope.
The circumstances differ from story to story because life does too. Yet a common thread runs through the collection: the relationships we experience can leave lasting impressions on our hearts and lives. Some experiences bring joy, others leave questions, and some require us to forgive, rebuild, release, wait, or begin again. And through it all, faith reminds us that God is present, even when we cannot yet see how the pieces will come together.
WHEN A STORY MAKES YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR OWN
While developing Pieces of Us, we recognized an opportunity to extend the reading experience. Fiction gives us the freedom to enter someone else’s world for a while. We can watch characters make decisions, wrestle with emotions, confront misunderstandings, and discover truths about themselves and the people they love.
Sometimes, however, their experiences cause us to think about our own.
What am I carrying?
What have I learned about love?
Is there something I need to communicate more clearly?
Where might I need wisdom?
What am I beginning to understand about myself or a situation?
What would I like to bring before God?
Those kinds of questions became the foundation for the Pieces of Us companion journal.

PERSONAL REFLECTION
The companion journal was created to help readers pause after the stories and consider what surfaced for them personally. It is not about analyzing the authors’ stories or arriving at a particular answer. And it is not intended to turn reading into another obligation. Instead, the journal provides a quiet, faith-centered space to think, write, pray, and move at your own pace.
The reflections are organized around the stories in Pieces of Us and include prompts that encourage readers to look more closely at their thoughts, feelings, relationships, experiences, and responses.
Throughout the journal, readers are invited to:
Pause & Reflect on what a story or theme brings to mind.
Look Closely at emotions, patterns, needs, expectations, and relationships.
Bring It Before God through prayer and faith-centered reflection.
Consider a Wise Next Step without feeling pressured to resolve everything immediately.
Record What They Are Taking With Them as they move through each part of the journal.
There is room to write honestly, to leave a question unanswered for a while, and to return to a reflection when the time feels right.
ONE THOUGHTFUL PROGRESSION
The companion journal follows a three-part structure that reflects some of the broader themes found throughout Pieces of Us.

Part I — LOVE FINDS US
Receiving Love with Attention
This section invites readers to consider how they recognize, receive, and respond to love and care. It creates space to notice what we may overlook when life becomes busy or our attention is divided.
Part II — WHEN LOVE IS TESTED
Responding with Truth and Care
Relationships sometimes encounter misunderstandings, unmet expectations, hurt, conflict, or change. This section encourages thoughtful reflection on communication, emotions, boundaries, needs, and the choices we make when relationships become difficult.
Part III — GRACE MEETS THE PIECES
Making Room for What Comes Next
Not every situation can be repaired in the way we imagined, and not every answer comes quickly. This section turns toward grace, wisdom, healing, growth, and what it may mean to move forward with God.
The progression is intentional. Readers are not rushed toward a conclusion. They are encouraged to pay attention to where they are and consider what they may need as they move forward.
BEGIN WITH GOD
Faith is woven throughout both Pieces of Us and its companion journal. The journal encourages readers to bring their thoughts before God rather than relying solely on their own understanding. Prayer pages provide space to consider concerns, relationships, decisions, and hopes in His presence.
Some reflections may be easy to write about. Others may touch tender places. In those moments, the invitation is simple: slow down. There is no requirement to answer every question or fill every page. Readers can write a paragraph, a sentence, a prayer, or simply sit with a question. The journal is there to serve the reader, not the other way around.

DESIGNED FOR INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP USE
The Pieces of Us companion journal can be used privately alongside the anthology, but it can also support meaningful conversations among readers.
Friends, book clubs, women’s groups, faith communities, and other reading groups can use selected reflections as conversation starters while allowing personal journal entries to remain private.
A group discussion may begin with a fictional character or situation and naturally open the door to conversations about communication, relationships, faith, forgiveness, healing, and hope. Readers can decide how much or how little they want to share.
PAUSE AND REFLECT
You do not need a journal to enjoy Pieces of Us. The anthology stands on its own as a collection of Christian fiction. The companion journal simply offers another way to experience it. Read a story, sit with what stayed with you, write if you want to, pray about what matters, consider what you are learning, and then continue when you are ready.
There is no perfect way to use these pages. Read the stories. Reflect on what speaks to you and make room for what comes next.
